The Well-being Specialists

When issues can't be resolved internally, we're here to help

In an ideal world, organisations would be free of problems and difficulties. However, we do not live in an ideal world. This means that sooner or later a given organisation is going to encounter a significant difficulty or major problem. In some cases, the problem may be of such significance that it warrants an independent enquiry or investigation. Alternatively, it may be that an independent enquiry or investigation is the best option in order to prevent a problem becoming a major problem. In either case, Avenue Consulting Ltd is able to provide the services of an experienced investigator who can agree terms of reference with you, carry out the investigation and write a report addressing your concerns.

Since the implementation of the Public Interest Disclosure Act, 'whistleblowing' policies have become much more common. As a result of this, many organisations are now finding that problems, which may perhaps have previously existed without ever coming to light, are now being brought to the attention of managers. Of course, it would be very foolish to become defensive about such matters and perhaps try to simply brush them under the carpet. A much more positive and realistic (and safer!) approach is to investigate complaints raised and to establish what problems may need to be addressed in the workplace. Sometimes it is not appropriate for an internal investigation to take place, perhaps because of the seriousness of the matters raised or because of the personnel involved who may be known to any potential investigator. It has also often been found to be the case that internal investigations carry little weight because if they do not find in favour of the complainant, their validity is often questioned by staff who may feel that a cover up has taken place. This is much less likely to happen with an independent, external investigation.

All investigative work undertaken by Avenue Consulting is confidential. The report will be prepared and submitted to the nominated person. In setting the terms of reference for the investigation, it will be identified who is the key person to receive such a report. The circulation of the report by that nominated person will be a matter for the organisation itself to decide, preferably in consultation with the consultant.

We recognise that independent investigations can appear to be expensive. However, we feel it is important to balance any such costs against the costs of not addressing the problems thoroughly, constructively and appropriately. A high-quality independent investigation can prevent major problems in terms of low staff morale, poor retention of staff, tension and conflict within the workforce, perhaps leading to low standards of work, and also possibly employment tribunals or even court cases.

If you feel we may be able to assist you in terms of an independent inquiry or investigation, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
