Strategic and operational management development
Of course, managers have a very important role to play ensuring that high-quality standards are achieved and statutory requirements are met. Managers are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the wheels of the organisation keep turning effectively and efficiently. This involves having to be competent at two levels: strategic and the operational. Strategic management is concerned with 'the big picture'. Clarifying the overall aims and objectives of the organisation and making sure, as far as possible, that its strategy meets those aims. This is closely linked with the idea of leadership - having a vision of how the organisation should be and taking whatever steps are necessary in order to work towards making that vision a day-to-day reality.
Operational management is concerned with the nuts and bolts, making sure that the day-to-day running of the organisation and its component parts takes place as smoothly as possible. Arguably, in the best organisations, strategic and operational management are closely integrated. A major theme of the management development workshops offered by Avenue Consulting is therefore the importance of ensuring that strategy and operational reality are very closely intertwined.
