Helping organisations to tackle their own problems
Organisations vary enormously in terms of the challenges they face and the problems they encounter. However, it would be naïve not to recognise that all organisations face problems of some kind - no organisation is a problem-free zone!
Most problems that organisations face are of a relatively minor nature and can easily be dealt with from within the organisation's own resources without the need for recourse to an external source of support or assistance. However, some problems are best dealt with through the aid of an external consultant. This could be because the problem is of such magnitude or seriousness that the help of an external expert is called for. Alternatively, it could be that the problem arises through the nature of the culture of the organisation and to resolve the problem requires somebody who is not steeped in that culture - that is, someone who does not have an axe to grind or a set of interests to protect within the organisation. Organisations tend to develop their own culture which has a strong influence on how situations are perceived and dealt with. For the most part, the development of such a culture is a positive thing as it helps to give an organisation a clear identity and a framework in which to work. However, on occasions the culture can become the problem in the sense that being used to working in certain ways can blind staff and managers to other options - they can become 'culture bound'.
In addition, an organisation may find that it is facing problems that it has not encountered before and is unsure how to respond. However, an external consultant who has wide knowledge and experience of a range of organisations and the problems they encounter may be in a much stronger position to advise on how to tackle the problem, or problems, concerned.
The role of the consultant is not to solve problems for organisations, but rather to assist them in tackling their own problems - to help them learn, grow and develop from the experience of rising to the challenge that the problems present. A skilled consultant should be able to bring fresh insights, to offer a wider perspective and to warn managers of pitfalls that they may not be aware of, but which the consultant has encountered elsewhere.
