Professional Profile

Sue brings to Avenue Consulting experience and qualifications that equip her to play a part in dealing with, and advising on, a range of issues that involve people and their problems, although her focus within the team is more directly concerned with its publishing wing - Learning Curve Publishing - and in the general management of the office.

Running alongside her role within Avenue Consulting, Sue also has a long history of working with social work students and practitioners and voluntary sector employees as a mentor and assessor. Her appointment between 2001 and 2005 as an associate lecturer with the School of Health and Social Welfare at the Open University has helped to keep her informed about the pressures faced by the health and social care work force in particular.  Sue has written or co-written a number of books and learning resources on issues related to working with people and is currently undertaking doctoral research into the role reciprocity plays in the care and well-being of dependent older people.

Background

Sue was born in Liverpool in 1955 and moved to North Wales as a child of ten. Following a grammar school education in the Wrexham area she worked as a civil servant in Central London for a few years, before moving back to North Wales where she has lived ever since. Once settled back in Wales she qualified as a nurse and spent some years in that profession, taking some time out to be at home while her daughter was a baby. After about eight years of working as a nurse, Sue decided that she needed a new challenge and spent three years at Liverpool University, from where she graduated in 1991, achieving an upper second class degree in Sociology. Following a brief interlude as a housewife and Open University student, Sue was accepted on a social work training programme and was awarded the Diploma in Social Work in 1994.

Initially Sue worked in a variety of settings, including working with adults with physical disabilities, before settling in a field of work which enabled her to match her professional interests with her academic focus, that of social work with older people. During the years she spent working for Shropshire Social Services Sue registered with the University of Wales, Bangor, and was awarded an MA in Social Work, for her study about the user participation movement and the relative lack of involvement by older people. Although having enjoyed being in the practice field, Sue decided in 2001 to have another new challenge and left to play a key role in developing Avenue Consulting and to move into the fields of education, publishing and writing.
