Working With Loss - A Guide to Dealing with Loss or Grief in the Workplace

By Bernard Moss

Pack Cover - Working with Loss

The impact of a major loss on a person's life can be quite devastating and, of course, the effects will apply not only in the individual's private life, but also in their working life. Loss and grief can be major issues in an organisation for a number of reasons. First, a key member of staff may experience a major loss and, as a result of this, not perform to a satisfactory level, perhaps causing major problems for his or her team or even the whole organisation. Second, if a major loss is experienced at work (for example the death of an employee whilst on duty), the whole organisation can experience a grief reaction which can cause significant problems if people are not equipped to deal with the implications that arise. Third, an organisation may have to deal with loss and grief issues through its clientele - for example: schools, colleges, universities as well as hospitals, residential homes for older people and so on. And, of course, loss and grief issues are a major concern in the emergency services: fire, police, ambulance and so on. Fourth, the organisation may be involved in a disaster situation; for example a major fire, a plane crash or a terrorist attack may have a significant impact on a large number of staff within an organisation.

It is therefore clearly unwise for organisations to attempt to sweep loss and grief issues under the carpet. A much wiser approach is to become more aware of the implications of loss and grief for individuals and groups of people and to be prepared to tackle these as positively and constructively as possible. This pack is designed to help equip organisations for undertaking that task.

The pack provides background material relating to the complexities of loss and grief and the effects they have on people and organisations. In addition, the pack contains a number of exercises supported by overhead transparencies which are designed to enable organisations to mount training courses to help equip either specific key staff or the workforce as a whole for responding appropriately to loss and grief. The pack is not intended for counsellors or other such specialists, but rather for all staff and managers within an organisation so that all concerned can have at least a basic grasp of how to respond to the difficult circumstances when one or more people have experienced a major loss.
